The Student Nurse Extern-Level I is responsible for providing health care to patients working closely with members of the health care team collecting data and implementing patient care. The SNE will have periodic, designated observation opportunities with a designated member of the health care team where they will be exposed to different functions of the multidisciplinary team and how they contribute to high quality patient care. * Campuses available o Allentown Campus o Anderson Campus, Easton, Level 2 Trauma Center o Bethlehem Campus, Level 1 Trauma Center o Carbon Campus, Lehighton, Level 4 Trauma Center o Easton Campus o Geisinger St. Luke's Campus, Orwigsburg, Level 4 Trauma Center o Miners Campus, Coaldale, Level 4 Trauma Center o Monroe Campus, Stroudsburg, Level 4 Trauma Center o Sacred Heart Campus, Allentown o Upper Bucks Campus, Quakertown, Level 4 Trauma Center o Warren Campus, Phillipsburg NJ The Student Nurse Extern I Program is for nursing students Currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program having successfully completed sophomore year and entering junior year of nursing program. OR Currently enrolled in an associates nursing program having successfully completed first year and entering last year of nursing program. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Follows treatment plan as directed by licensed personnel. * Performs the following tasks as assigned: (a.) Vital signs, (b.) Intake and output measurements, (c.) Glucometry, (d.) Specimen collection, (e.) Patient ADLs (bathing, oral care, toileting, feeding, mobility/ambulation, etc.), (f.) Restocking supplies; checking and/or cleaning equipment. * Assists with the admitting process and documents on admission database as appropriate. * Performs necessary functions to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction with service. * Accepts responsibility for providing safe, appropriate, quality patient care. * Communicates changes in patients' conditions to the RN. * Documentation for all assigned responsibilities * Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs as appropriate. * Complies with established chain of command for work related problems. * Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. * Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. * Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). * Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety. * Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes, and practices. * Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. * Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. * Other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Stands for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walks 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Sits up to 7 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Consistently lifts, carries, and pushes objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts, carries, and pushes objects up to 75 lbs. Transports patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoops and bends. Frequently reaches above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision. EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalent. Currently enrolled in a baccalaureate nursing program having successfully completed sophomore year (two written instructor references) and entering junior year of nursing program. OR currently enrolled in an associates nursing program having successfully completed first year (two written instructor references) and entering last year of nursing program. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Current BLS/CPR certification. Attends St Luke's University Health Network orientation for this position. Must have ability to read, write and understand English.
