Registered Nurse (RN)


Utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as primary focus. Works with a variety of healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned.  * Responds to and initiates care for medical emergencies throughout the facility. This includes the ability to perform continuous CPR until properly relieved. * Administers and documents medications on the Medication Administration Record. * Performs histories and physicals on inmates. * Assesses patient health status and refers to appropriate level of healthcare provider. * Physically assists the Physician in patient examinations and treatments. * Documents all nursing care provided. * Implements and follows up on Physician/Dentist verbal and written orders. * Teaches healthcare information to patients and correctional staff. * Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills. * Performs venipuncture and I.V. therapy. * Collect samples, specimens and cultures per Physician orders. * Follows security regulations for keys, sharps and controlled medications. * Delegates and supervises other team members as appropriate. * Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices. * Ability to deal with and respond to stressful situations in a stressful environment. * Requires regular and reliable attendance. * Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices. PERFORMANCE STANDARD   All Employees are expected to follow all Federal, State and local laws; effectively work together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the expectations of the Hampton Sheriff's Office. Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics. * Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate-patient within the framework established by the correctional system * Performs assessments of inmate-patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary. Utilizes assessment skills that require a knowledge base for both normal and abnormal adult health status. Communicates assessment data in a comprehensive, orderly fashion verbally and in writing * Plans nursing care by identification of inmate-patient needs bases on assessments. Makes appropriate, timely referral and initiates appropriate nursing care based on institutional policies and procedures. Documents plans appropriately * Implements nursing care and medical care orders in a knowledgeable, safe and cost-effective manner. Documents nursing care and appropriate medically directed care in accordance with institutional policies and procedures. Provides inmate education as an integral part of total patient care.  * Evaluates and documents inmate-patient responses to aspects of healthcare and makes appropriate referrals to members of the healthcare team * As team leader or charge nurse delegate's duties to other healthcare team members based on their skill, knowledge and experience and guides the provision of care by others * Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships * Communicate information in an accurate, concise and timely manner * Protects confidentiality of information in written and verbal communications * Participate in problem solving activities of the healthcare team by attending unit meetings, utilize positive interpersonal skills and appropriate channels to initiate change. * Functions as a role model for other health care unit personnel and maintains harmonious relationships with security, inmate-patients and members of the health care team * Uses current knowledge to promote a safe environment  * Maintains clinical area in clean, neat, safe manner and participates in required cleaning assignments * Adheres to institution and medical unit infection control policies * Understands and adheres to environmental safety guidelines, policies and procedures. Participates in fire and disaster programs and drills as appropriate. * Maintains current professional skills and continues  professional growth to enhance the practice of correctional nursing and the image of the organization * Attends appropriate in-services and continuing education offerings to obtain and maintain necessary skills * Participates in offering education to inmates, security officers and other members of the health care team * Exhibits an ability to participate in the change process to support the organization of the health care unit * Accepts assignments and extra duties with flexibility and willingness to participate in activities other than direct patient care * Adheres to personnel policies to enhance the operation of the healthcare unit * Conforms to dress code * Adheres to attendance policy * Reports to work at designated time * Maintains required annual licensure and credentialing EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment. Must conform to security clearance and place of employment.
