24-25 Sub Pool - Health Services (Nurses)


SUB RN: $250 per day SUB LVN: $150 per day Days: not set Primary Purpose: Under the direction of the Director of Student Health Services, act as a substitute nurse for all schools. Perform school nurse duties in delivery of care in areas of critical need. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program Valid Registered Nurse or Vocational Nurse license to practice nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners Preferred - Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct hearing and vision screenings Healthcare Provider CPR certification by American Heart Association or American Red Cross Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of physical assessment skills and signs and symptoms of disease Continuing education credits required for license renewal every two years Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policies and procedures; maintain emotional control under stress Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize and communicate Basic computer skills Bilingual communication skills preferred Experience: Minimum of two years professional nursing experience, preferably in pediatric nursing, school nursing, or community health. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Program Management * Acts as a substitute nurse when nurse is off campus or involved in on campus health screening or teaching. * Provide services and assists in the effective implementation of Health Services program in an assignment that is subject to change based upon need. * Work collaboratively with Health Services/Director of Student Health Services and the primary school nurse regularly assigned to a campus. * Communicate changes or concerns to primary campus nurse and or campus principal if indicated. * Provide emergency and or acute care for specific students as directed and according to district policy and procedures. * Manage the activities/care and needs of a school in the absence of the regularly assigned nurse. * Maintain appropriate documentation in SNAP software or other system as directed by Director of Student Health Services or campus nurse. * Assist campus nurse with documentation and reports. * Attend field trips with medically fragile students that require nursing care if directed. * Assist primary campus nurse in immunizations or studies if necessary for continuity of care. * Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students. * Assess student problems, communicate with parents regarding individual students, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up as needed. Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community. * Serve as health advocate for students. * Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached). * Administer medications according to district policy and procedures. * Perform screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of Health, Texas Education Agency, and district policy as directed to do so. (if certified) * Assist with immunization clinics as needed. Consultation * Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community. * Advise campus administration in crisis or emergency situations and participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse. * Available to staff to confer about health concerns, but not to impinge on time with students. Administration * Review student immunization records when requested. Refer students as needed to meet TDSHS immunization requirements. * Enforce procedures to ensure proper administration, safety, and security of medications, first aid or health supplies, and campus health equipment. * Comply with policies established by federal and state law, Texas Department of State Health Services, State Board of Education and Hays CISD school board, in the area of health services. * Report potential health and safety hazards to principal and Student Health Services Director. Professional * Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. * Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. * Maintain nursing license with the Texas Board of Nursing, certification in CPR, vision, hearing and scoliosis and Acanthosis nigricans screening applicable to campus grade level and provide copies of all licenses, certifications, CEUs and training to Health Services. * Promote nursing as a profession within the school, district and community. * Participate in annual skills training and review. Other * Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Train and supervise assigned LVN/CMA/CNA, nurse aides or office staff for delegated duties and maintain records of training. Equipment Used: Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, AED, vision/hearing screening equipment, 02, ambu bag, epipen, peak flow meter, nebulizer, glucometer, personal computer, copier, refrigerator and other basic clinic equipment.
