The PreOp/PACU Charge Nurse is responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating the nursing care provided to the surgical patient during the pre-, intra-, and post-operative period. Responsibilities * Functions in all perioperative clinical settings and must be willing to cross-train to achieve the full capacity of care. Works collaboratively with surgeon offices, ASC staff and adjunct UT departments to facilitate operational workflows and ensure overall goals of the organization are met consistently. Liaises with physician offices and vendors for medication, supply and equipment requests. Communicates effectively with surgeons to keep preference cards up to date. * Acts as the Team Leader for clinical staff in the Pre- & Post/PACU settings. Collaborates with the ASC Nurse Manager, OR Charge RN & Surgical Technologist Lead for the planning and distribution of patient assignments based on skill-mix and patient acuities. Reviews upcoming surgical cases to forecast and plan for supply procurement, staffing needs, etc. Creates the staff schedule on a weekly basis and monitors/approves timecards for accuracy. Coordinates interdisciplinary care and manages the patient board. * Leads routine staff huddles to maintain team alignment. Identifies learning opportunities and works with the Staff Development Coordinator to provide enriching educational experiences. Assesses the learning needs of clinical staff and provides orientation and ongoing educational opportunities. Provides periodic and annual evaluations of staff according to the reporting structure set forth by the Administrative Director. * Investigates and resolves incidents and complaints from physicians, patients, visitors and staff in conjunction with ASC Leadership. Responsible for the ongoing analysis and evaluation of nursing services rendered. Ensures compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Available as a resource during site surveys. * Must have a flexible schedule and willingness to report to work with short notice and be willing to function in a staff clinical role during times of need. Maintains and demonstrates current skills and knowledge of intravenous therapy, medication administration and effects, patient assessment, airway maintenance, patient education, emotional/social support of patients and families, and other needed clinical competencies. * Makes recommendations for organizational needs and quality improvement opportunities to the Administrative Director. Participates in quality and performance improvement projects. Ensures compliance with organizational policies & procedures. Performs periodic chart audits in accordance with documentation protocols prior to and after the surgical procedure. Maintains inventory in care areas and required logs. * Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Active Texas RN license and a minimum of five years intraoperative experience, Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, BLS Certification, ACLS Certification, PALS Certification, Flexibility in days and hours available to work, Knowledge of current surgical procedures and anesthesia care, Demonstrated leadership, organizing, and problem-solving skills, Effective problem-solving skills to include data analysis and judgment to make effective decisions, Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, multi-physician practice environment, Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with providers, staff, and patients, Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving skills, Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Basic computer skills and experience with electronic health records. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications: Previous Charge Nurse experience preferred, Master's Degree in Nursing, CAPA/CPAN certification, Bilingual in English and Spanish, Experience in the Pre-, Intra- and Post-operative setting. Experience in an ambulatory surgery center. Salary Range $100,000+ depending on Qualifications Physical Demands and Working Conditions: * Work hours are variable based on patient care needs but are generally Monday-Friday * Ability to sit and stand for prolong periods of time, ability to walk, some bending, stooping and stretching * Ability to perform overhead and low reaching activities * Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to provide patient are and operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, and occasional use of other office equipment * Requires normal range of hearing/eyesight/voice projection to record, prepare, and communicate appropriately * Physical strength for equipment needs and patient care activities; may require frequent lifting/moving up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting/moving in excess of 50 pounds * Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs * Exposure to noisy equipment * Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, high stress/pressure, handles emergency or crisis situations, regular interaction with emotional patients and/or family members * Work is performed in a patient care setting and may involve exposure to infections, communicable diseases and hazardous materials, radiation/laser, waste gases and blood and body fluids.
