Public Health Nurse II (School Health)
General Statement of Duties Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for a Public Health Nurse II. This opening is for a 10-month Traditional School Health Nurse. This position carries an assignment of 2 or more schools and reports directly to the assigned schools from their home; provides school health services to all age groups; provides health information/education to school staff as well as the students. The Public Health Nurse II functions autonomously within her assigned schools but is also a member of the school health team. This position may make home visits to follow up with parents about student health concerns at school. A county vehicle would be available to use for making any home visits. All Public Health School Nurses may be required to work 2-4 Saturday immunization clinics per year to increase vaccine compliance rates for students within the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools and may be required to provide emergency response in the event of an emergent Public Health situation. 10 month nurses will be off during the summer months and this time is unpaid. Distinguishing Features The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices, principles,and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; Working knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health; Knowledge of available resources and organizations in the community; Ability to record accurately the services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports,and medical instructions; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations andmaking decisions and; Ability to secure the cooperation of clients, to elicit needed information, and to maintaineffective working relationships. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from a four year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience in specialty area assigned. Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. Individuals hired without a rotation through a public health department as part of educational requirement will be required to complete Introduction to the Public Health Nursing course within one year of hire. Drivers License is required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Checking and monitoring the immunization status of students; Implementing emergency care plans and developing, teaching and monitoring plans of care for students with special health needs; Teaching and monitoring school staff members in the daily administration and documentation of medications and; Assist with staff education, vision/hearing screenings and other school nurse duties as assigned/needed and; Assisting in the investigation and monitoring of communicable diseases in the assigned schools and other areas of Forsyth County.
