General Statement of Duties The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking to hire a team-oriented individual to work as part-time School Nurse. The School Nurse will work twenty-four (24) hours per week for 10 months each year. This Nurse will provide school health services for 2 schools (or more) depending on staffing needs. This position is part of a school health team that provides health services for the local school system per contract between Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools and the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. The nurse will be a health resources person for the school community, interacting with students and their families on a regular basis, and developing positive relationships that will enhance the students' educational experiences. The School Nurse will function autonomously within his or her assigned schools, but will also be a member of the school health team. This is a school based position, so the nurse will travel directly from home to the assigned schools on a daily basis. A driver's license is required in order to travel to other assigned schools and to make home visits, if necessary. A county vehicle may be available for such visits. The nurse assists with investigating and monitoring communicable diseases not only in the assigned schools but may also assist during outbreaks in other areas of Forsyth County. During the summer, the school nurse will review student enrollment health records for compliance and assists with any summer program needs as assigned. This position is a 10-month position with unpaid leave for eight (8) weeks over the summer month, two (2) weeks around Winter Break/Christmas, and one (1) week around Spring Break/Easter. This position may require working weekend hours. Distinguishing Features The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge and abilities: Considerable knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practices,principles, and techniques employed in the field of Public Health and relatedprograms; Considerable knowledge of available resources and organizations and the abilityto coordinate these as needed; Working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health; Ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraisingsituations and making decisions; Ability to secure the cooperationof clients, to elicit needed information, and tomaintain effective working relationships and; Ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records,reports, and medical instructions. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from a four year college or university with a B.S. Degree in Nursing which includes a public health nursing rotation and one year of professional nursing experience in specialty area; or Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience in specialty area assigned. Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. Individuals hired without a rotation through a public health department as part of educational requirement will be required to complete Introduction to the Public Health Nursing course within one year of hire. Valid driver's license required. Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Checking and monitoring the immunization status of students; Implementing emergency care plans and developing, teaching, and monitoring plansofcare for students with special health needs; Teaching and monitoring school staff members in the daily administration anddocumentation of medications; Assisting in the investigation and monitoring of communicable diseases identified inthe assigned schools and other areas of Forsyth County and; Conducting home visits as needed to follow up with parents about issues at school.
