RN First Assist - OR Full Time Days
Position Summary Position Summary Performs in the role of first assistant to the surgeon, consistently demonstrating knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and carrying out functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal patient results. Responsibilities Essential Functions • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of all surgical procedures and effectively providing assistance to the surgeon during those procedures requiring an assistant. • Activities to include, but not limited to, positioning the patient, draping the patient, clamping and tying, cauterizing superficial bleeders, providing exposure through the use of retractors, maintaining a dry field through the use of suction equipment, following and cutting sutures, suturing subcutaneous and skin tissue, injection of local anesthetic, wound closure as directed by the surgeon and placement and suturing of drains as surgically indicated. • In performance of duties, displays knowledge and skill in tissue handling, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and provision of hemostasis asepsis, and infection control. • Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate preventative and corrective action. • Follows standards of association and works under acceptable practice. • Performs under the direct supervision of the surgeon. • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures. Other Related Functions • Demonstrates proficiency in perioperative nursing practice in both scrub and circulator roles in all surgical specialties. Performs circulating or scrub duties when the need arises. • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/area/ departments policies and procedures. • May assist in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines. • Assumes the responsibility for professional growth and development, and continuing education. Qualifications Education/Training • Associate's degree required. • Certificate of successful completion of an accredited First Assistant training course which included didactic and supervised clinical learning components. Licensure/Certification • Maintains current one of the following: o State of Florida RN licensure or valid eNLC multistate RN license; or o Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or o Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification. Experience • Three (3) years of recent diversified perioperative experience required. • Demonstrates clinical expertise and advanced decision-making skills, using the nursing process framework to focus on patient's needs.
