Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Breast Medical Oncology
The mission of The University of Texas M. D. SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Mid-level Provider position is to provide direct patient care the outpatient and inpatient setting in support of general breast cancer and education in management and prevention of disease. KEY FUNCTIONS Patient Assessment/Intervention/Evaluation/Performance of Diagnostic/Therapeutic Procedures: Provide quality patient care in relation to the patient's prescribed diagnosis, treatment, age group, development and other identified needs. Verbally communicate findings to the patient, family members and physician. Conduct health assessment including the medical history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment and verbally communicate recommendations for health care and prevention based on findings. On inpatient service daily rounds should be conducted on each patient and findings reported to the attending physician. Must be able to visually check records, verify findings, and interact with multidisciplinary team in provision of care as warranted. Monitor and review findings of laboratory, clinical, radiographic, and procedural data on ambulatory or inpatient service and develop appropriate plan of care in preparation for assessment and treatment of each individual patient. Review findings of history, laboratory data, radiographic data, plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management as outlined in collaboration of physician. Prevents, minimizes, and manages symptoms, toxicities, health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physician and other allied personnel. Evaluates patient response to treatment and health care provided and modifies care as needed (under supervision of physician if medical acts are required). Provides psychological support to patient and family. Provides healthcare throughout the disease process: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, and prevention of cancer and/or complications. Facilitates the use of institutional and agency resources. Schedules consultation, diagnostic procedures, and facilitates coordination for patient convenience if at all possible in coordination with the attending physician. Writes prescriptions (if eligible) as needed. Provides triage in ambulatory setting for consistent patient care. Assist with data entry and retrieval of patient data and writes or dictates patient letters, notes, progress notes, telephone notes and consultation notes. Writes chemotherapy orders under the supervision of a physician or verifies orders written by physician. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse may write for other therapeutic agents as approved by the institution. Educator/Consultant/Research/Non-Essential: Provides and general health education to the patient and his/her family. Participates in formal and informal instruction of nursing students, professional nurses and other health professionals. Keeps current by attending continuing education programs related to the clinical area and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse's area of certification, reviewing the literature related to the clinical area, participating in professional nursing organizations, communicating advances in nursing practice or health care in general, in writing through publications, and presentation of scientific papers. Assists in development of education material for use by staff or patient. Attends departmental meetings pertinent to the Advanced Practice Provider. Applies pertinent research in development of patient care and evidenced based practice. Contributes to research efforts of the department in accrual to protocols or trials. Provides consultation to colleagues and allied personnel. Collaborates with medical, nursing and other disciplines regarding plan of care, follow-up and evaluation. Recommends therapeutic measures for relief of symptoms. Contributes to research efforts of the department and applies pertinent research to clinical practice. Identifies clinical problems amenable to research methods. Initiates or collaborates in research projects. Assists with the implementation of registered departmental research protocols. Participates in professional activities (research, presentations, publications, etc.) and performs other duties as required. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. EXPERIENCE Preferred: At least one year of experience as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Prior experience working with Breast Cancer patients. LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION Required: All of the following: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100). MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.
