Department Profile: The Duke Children's NICU is a 74-bed (growing to 81 in early 2025) Level IV NICU providing world class care to over 1000 patients a year. The unit is known for nursing expertise in acute and chronic care of critically ill newborns. Diagnoses include extremely low birth weight infants, infants with persistent pulmonary hypertension, and congenital anomalies such as diaphragmatic hernia, gastroschisis, neural tube defects, genetic disorders and palliative care. We are currently looking for a dynamic nurse leader who can guide our talented nursing team in delivering exemplary care to each patient and family. A leader in this role will partner with another Nurse Manager of Operations as well as a team of high functioning NICU nurse leaders (Assistant Nurse Managers, Neonatal CNS and Clinical Nurse IVs). The NICU nursing leadership team works closely with Medical Directors and Advanced Practice Provider leaders to oversee operations of the unit and promote optimal patient outcomes. The right individual for this role will: * Have experience working as a bedside nurse with high acuity, neonatal patients. * Have demonstrated leadership experience through prior management, team lead or charge nursing roles. * Possess a willingness to be flexible to meet the changing needs of our patients, their families, and our outstanding team. * Collaborate effectively with all members of our multi-disciplinary team. * Show creativity in thinking about how to solve operational opportunities. Work Hours & Shifts: Full-Time, 40 hours per week Job Summary: * Manage and coordinate patient care and personnel needs. * Manage various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, promotions, and scheduling. * Collaborate in the development, implementation and expansion of learning opportunities and skill development. * Analyze, develop, and maintain an effective and efficient nursing care delivery system that reflects patient and family needs across the continuum. * Communicate and collaborate with multiple disciplines with a focus on safety and quality. * Promote education for patients, patient families and the community; participate in direct patient care activities as a targeted strategy for role modeling or information gathering. * Collaborate with nursing colleagues within Duke Children's to promote optimal utilization of nursing resources among the various inpatient platforms. * Identify clinical operational needs; manage equipment and supplies and monitor equipment maintenance. * Assess the environment and make recommendations to ensure optimal patient comfort, safety, and compliance with various regulatory bodies. * Collaborate to determine fiscal requirements; submit budgetary recommendations, including necessary nursing personnel and patient care materials necessary for the provision of care. * Cultivate exemplary customer service throughout the organization; promote effective communication skills to include, but not limited to problem solving, assertiveness, and support for team members, feedback, active listening, and conflict resolution. Develop and implement processes to enhance clinic operations and practices for ongoing quality improvement. * Develop, document, implement, and monitor written policies and procedures. * Perform other related duties. * Recruit, retain and develop top nursing talent. Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required: * 3 years of nursing experience required. * Bachelor's degree in nursing required. Desired Skills and Qualifications: * MSN preferred. * Prior management experience, specifically within an inpatient neonatal care setting, highly preferred. This can include extensive charge nurse or team lead experience. * Clinical quality management and service management skills * Orientation, accountability, planning, prioritization, and time management * Problem solving and innovation * Knowledge of budget and financial concerns * Active listening and effective communication * Teambuilding, conflict resolution, and management * Motivating and influencing team members in line with the DUHS Culture Commitments and DUH Mission/Vision * Working knowledge of regulatory requirements including North Carolina Nurse Practice Act Licensure, Certification or Registration Required: * Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required. * BLS (or higher) certification required.
