Bonus Potential Summary/Objective The Lactation Consultant provides support and instruction to mother-infant pairs with breastfeeding needs/lactation problems in a manner developmentally appropriate for adolescents and adults as necessary. The lactation consultant is specially trained to prevent, recognize and solve breastfeeding difficulties. ANA Standards of Practice: A. Assessment: the registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or the situation. B. Diagnosis: the registered nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine the diagnoses or issues. C. Outcomes Identification: the registered nurse identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or the situation. D. Planning: the registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes. E. Implementation: the registered nurse implements the identified plan, coordinates care delivery, employs strategies to promote health and a safe environment. F. Evaluation: the registered nurse evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes. G. Quality of Practice: the registered nurse systematically enhances the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice. Essential Job Duties Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. * Assesses the knowledge level and personal goals of the mother to identify educational opportunities related to breastfeeding. * Actively promotes breastfeeding and instructs mothers on all tasks necessary to reach their own goals for breastfeeding. * Will evaluate breastfeeding oral motor mechanics of infants and milk transfer and will make appropriate recommendations and management strategies based on these findings. * Plans and coordinates staff breastfeeding education activities in collaboration with the department leadership. * Will serve as an expert resource to departments and staff through the facility to ensure knowledge of, and adherance to, hospital policies and procedures related to human milk collection, storage, transport and feedings. * Works with staff that provide breastfeeding support to antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum patients who require breastfeeding support throughout the facility. Required Education and Experience Graduate of a nursing program Required License/Certifications Current licensure in Texas as a Registered Nurse or a recognized compact state license. Current Certification as a IBCLC (international board certified lactation consultant). Proof of BLS certification within 30 days. NRP within 6 months of hire
