Job Description ECU Health About ECU Health Medical Center ECU Health Medical Center, one of four academic medical centers in North Carolina, is the 974-bed flagship hospital for ECU Health and serves as the primary teaching hospital for The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Health Medical Center has achieved Magnet designation twice and provides acute and intermediate care, rehabilitation and outpatient health services to a 29-county region that is home to more than 1.4 million people. Position Summary Enters prescription orders into the computer system. Reviews prescriptions for possible therapeutic problems, contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriate dosing. Discusses prescription clarifications with the prescriber or their office when necessary. Documents actions appropriately. Provides patient counseling regarding drug therapy. Provides drug information to health care professionals. Verifies the data entry and filling of all medications entered and prepared by pharmacy technicians. Follows all federal and state laws and regulations and hospital policies and procedures. Responsibilities 1. Verifies all prescription entries and preparations entered into system and prior to dispensing. Calls to question any items that need further review or clarification for reasons such as appropriate dosing, interactions, contraindications, allergies, legibility, or missing needed information. Documents actions accordingly. 2. Ensures data entry in the computer system is accurate and follows all legal restrictions and insurance requirements for data integrity. 3. Compounds and/or dispenses medications to patients. 4. Monitors patient's drug therapy profile for changes in drug, dose, and regimens to help facilitate optimal drug therapy outcomes. 5. Provides excellent customer service and remains professional at all times. Serves as a source of drug information and collaboration to staff and patients. 6. Recognizes and can support the treatment differences among different patient age groups. 7. Maintains pharmacist licensure and continuing education requirements. Completes annual training requirements per hospital policies. 8. Responsible for directing and supervising the daily work activities of a pharmacy technician. Performs other duties as assigned. 9. Monitors and maintains adequate drug and supply inventories. 10. Supports the quality assurance and safety reporting efforts of the department. Completes work, which is thorough, accurate, complete, and does not require assignment to be redone. Detail oriented and self-motivated. Minimum Requirements BS Pharmacy, MS Pharmacy, or Pharm. D. is required 1 year to 3 years in Retail Pharmacy is required.
