Ophthalmic Technician I- UPMC Vision Institute, Mercy Pavilion


University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Ophthalmic Technician to support UPMC Vision Institute located at the Mercy Pavilion: 1622 Locust Street Pittsburgh, PA 15219. The hours for this position will be Monday through Friday daylight hours (Shift start times vary based on clinic schedules). Occasional travel to other sites may be requested, pending staffing needs (~5% travel). This position offers Room for growth through the ophthalmic technician career ladder. The UPMC Vision Institute's headquarters opened at the UPMC Mercy Pavilion on May 1, 2023. This state-of-the-art facility in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood includes many resources for our experts, patients, visitors, and neighbors, such as: * 410,000 square feet of clinical and research space. * A dedicated clinical trials center. * Cutting-edge biotherapy treatments. * Patient-centered resources, including a life skills apartment, street lab, and rooftop sensory garden. * Complete low-vision rehab technologies and services. * Enhanced and proactive screening and care for underserved populations Purpose: Obtain detailed information from patients and perform a variety of diagnostic tests to the eyes to aid in the diagnosis and treatment course Responsibilities: * Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to - * Contact lenses: insertion, removal and instructions * Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate. * History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family. * Lensometry: automated and manual * Angle assessment & dilation of pupils * Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day. * Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fields * Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare test * Ocular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus * Tonometry: Icare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of * Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity * Assisting with imaging including OCT, fundus photos, corneal topography, a-scans, and visual fields * Patient workups, including refraction, in the comprehensive ophthalmology clinic. Qualifications: * High school diploma or equivalent is required. * Experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in an Ophthalmology office or combination of related education and/or experience preferred. * Completion of AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
