Date Revised: 2/13/19 Primary Purpose: Provide direct basic care, minor first aid, and minor emergency are for ill and injured students and staff; make appropriate referrals to the Licensed School Nurse; dispense medication according to District policy and Student Health Services Department protocols; and maintain student health records under the direction of the Licensed Registered School Nurse. Assist Licensed Registered School Nurse in maintaining the health and safety of students, faculty and staff. Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School diploma or GED required Valid Texas Vocational Nurse License issued by the Texas Board of Nursing Minimum of three years nursing experience in community health, hospital environment, physician's office, or school health. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED) Certification Valid Texas Driver's License with driving record that meets the requirements of the District Preferred: Pediatric/adolescent experience preferred Certified by the Texas Department of State Health Services to administer Hearing, Vision and Spinal Screenings required upon employment. Works under the supervision of the Licensed Registered School Nurse. The RN must be accessible to the LVN at least telephonically or by similar means. 2. Provides direct basic care, minor first aid, and minor emergency care for ill and injured students and staff according to established District policy and procedures within the Licensed Vocational Nurse scope of practice. 3. Contacts the Licensed Registered School Nurse relative to matters of non-routine nature. 4. Consults with the Licensed Registered School Nurse if unsure about policies, procedures, or protocols. 5. Secures immediate medical care for students in emergency situations. 6. Reports situations requiring the Licensed Registered School Nurse's assessment and/or interventions to the Registered School Nurse immediately. 7. Utilizes a systematic approach to provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care by collecting data and performing focused nursing assessments and implementing appropriate aspects of care within the Licensed Vocational Nurse's scope of practice. 8. Documents pertinent student health information and completely and accurately records findings obtained during student visits to the clinic. 9. Calls parents to report information regarding illnesses, injuries, and accidents. 10. Administers medication and documents administration according to District policy and procedures. 11. Maintains accurate records of medication dispensed. 12. Performs tube feedings, urinary catheterizations and other delegated procedures. If needed will attend training and successfully complete a skills checklist monitored by the Licensed Registered School Nurse. 13. Participates in the development, modification and implementation of the student health care plan based on physician's orders and individual student needs. 14. Communicates need for the development of student specific nursing care plans for students with special health care needs. 15. Collaborates with campus administrators, under the guidance of the Licensed Registered School Nurse, to ensure compliance with ARD committee decisions related to Health Services. 16. Reports knowledge or suspicion of communicable diseases to the Licensed Registered School Nurse. 17. Maintains current nursing licenses, certifications for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of the automated external defibrillator, and state mandated screenings and forwards new certifications and renewals to the Coordinator for Student Health Services when obtained. 18. Performs and/or assists with screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency and District policy - Assists with clinical screenings - Records health screening results on the student health record and enters results in computer in a timely manner. 19. Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, written communication from physicians and parents, and other documents pertaining to the student and keeps records organized and current. 20. Maintains confidentiality of all health information and records. 21. Assists in maintaining accurate immunization records on all students enrolled, ensuring compliance with state immunization laws. 22. Performs or assists the Licensed Registered School Nurse in notifying parents of students with delinquent immunizations and current requirements. 23, Participates in health teaching to promote, attain, and maintain optimum health and education for students and staff. 24, Communicates regularly with the Licensed Registered School Nurse regarding Student Health Services issues. 25. Reports potential health and safety hazards to the Licensed Registered School Nurse. 26. Requisitions supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory. 27. Participates in staff development, faculty meetings and special events as required. 28. Complies with District, department, and campus policies. 29. Models behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible. 30. Reports to work every day. 31. Other duties as may be assigned. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to proficiently use a computer and have knowledge of database software; spreadsheet software and word processing software.
