Originally known as the Miami City Hospital, the facility first opened its doors on June 25, 1918, with just 13 beds to serve the residents of Miami. Now known as the Jackson Memorial Hospital, this location acts as the pillar of the Jackson Health System, which operates more than 50 facilities it’s acquired across Florida.
The hospital’s growth over the last century currently offers enough space to host more than 1,700 beds to serve the community’s healthcare needs, but its patient-centered care model remains the same. Jackson Memorial Hospital’s mission – “To build the health of the community by providing a single, high standard of quality care for the residents of Miami-Dade County.” – guides administrators and staff.

A Place to Learn
The entire Jackson Healthcare System is academically focused, assisting in training future healthcare workers with hands-on learning opportunities. Jackson Memorial Hospital is considered the primary teaching facility for the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, though the two operate independently. It’s Community-Owned
Miami-Dade County owns and runs Jackson Memorial Hospital, providing tertiary care to area residents. The hospital operates through the Public Health Trust, a collection of volunteers who work in tandem with the county’s Board of Commissioners.
