We pulled data from the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings along with facility and employee reviews to create a list of 10 great healthcare employers in New York for your consideration. However, this list isn’t a top 10 but instead a compilation of facilities that offer unique employment opportunities for registered nurses (RNs) and allied health professionals. If you’re interested in pursuing a healthcare career in this diverse state, consider one of the great New York hospitals listed below.
Overview of 10 Top Hospitals in New York State
1. NYU Langone Medical Center – Tisch Hospital
Located in New York City near the East River stands New York University (NYU) Langone’s
Tisch Hospital. This 725-bed hospital is part of the larger NYU Langone Healthcare system. NYU Langone Hospital ranked as the No. 1 hospital in New York City and No. 3 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report’s U.S. Best Hospitals Honor Roll for 2022-23. It’s also ranked nationally in 14 adult specialties, including these seven specialties that ranked in the top five nationwide:

2. New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center
Columbia University Medical Center is another NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with close ties to Cornell Medical Center, sharing rankings on U.S. News & World Report. Like Cornell, it regionally ranked as the No. 2 in New York and the No. 7 hospital nationwide. This healthcare facility is in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City and is affiliated with Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons. It offers comprehensive healthcare at the 738-bed facility, with some top-ranking specialties including:

- Pediatric Cancer
- Urology
According to Columbia University Medical Center’s website, 96% of its nurses have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Furthermore, its nurses have 16 nursing research studies they’re working on and have 6 professional publications thus far, making it a top contender in nursing excellence and RN jobs in New York.
3. New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center regionally ranked No. 2 in 2022-23 on New York City’s Best Hospitals list and No. 7 nationwide. This 862-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine earned national rankings in 14 adult specialties and 10 children’s specialties with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospitals – Columbia University Medical Center. A few specialties it ranks nationally in both adult and pediatric care includes:

The NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital system also ranks high performing in 18 procedures and conditions. According to its website, this hospital is “consistently recognized as a leader in medical education, groundbreaking research and innovative patient care.” They continuously strive for nursing excellence and clinical proficiency by embodying the Magnet principles.
4. The Mount Sinai Hospital

Mount Sinai Hospital is another one of New York City’s hospitals in Manhattan. It ranked as the No. 3 best hospital in New York and nationally ranked No. 1 in Geriatrics and No. 6 in Cardiology & Heart Surgery in 2022-23. Additional awards and accreditations the healthcare system has received include:
- Magnet Recognition in nursing excellence for the fourth consecutive time
- Fast Company’s “World’s Most Innovative Companies” in 2021
- Forbes magazine’s “The Best Employers for Diversity” in 2019 and 2020
- National leaders in LGBT health equality from the 2019 Healthcare Equality Index scores
As a leader in healthcare technology, Mount Sinai Hospital launched the Center for Ophthalmic Artificial Intelligence and Human Health in early July 2023. This program aims to incorporate artificial intelligence into both the healthcare setting and education. As of early July 2023, this 1,080-bed academic hospital had many staff nursing positions posted on Vivian in specialties like behavioral health and intensive care.
5. Lenox Hill Hospital
Part of Northwell Health, Lenox Hill Hospital has 415 beds, serving patients in New York City’s Upper Eastside and surrounding areas. It ranked nationally in nine adult specialties and rated high-performing in two specialties and 17 procedures or conditions in 2022-23. Healthgrades named Lenox Hill Hospital on its 100 America’s Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care list for the 10th consecutive year in 2023. Lenox Hill Hospital has also received the following 2023 Healthgrades awards:
- America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention for its 12th consecutive year

In addition, it was named on Healthgrades’ America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2022, making it the only New York City hospital to receive this award that year. This hospital focuses on high-quality clinical care and outcomes, making it attractive to healthcare professionals. In September 2020, it earned Magnet Recognition status and strives for 100% evidence-based nursing practices.
6. North Shore University Hospital
North Shore University Hospital, also called NSUH, is a 764-bed hospital in Manhasset. NSUH is a Level I trauma center treating more than 90,000 people annually, per its website. Affiliated with Northwell Health, it nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties and rated high-performing in 14 procedures and conditions in 2022-23. Some areas of expertise at this facility include:

According to its website, this teaching hospital performed “first-in-the-world brain surgeries and the first liver transplant on Long Island.” NSUH is a Magnet hospital of nursing excellence, and as of early July 2023, seven of its units have been awarded the Beacon Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
7. Saint Francis Hospital
Located in Roslyn on Long Island, Saint Francis Hospital is a 364-bed medical facility that earned an “A” Grade in patient safety from the Leapfrog Group in 2023. In July 2022, it received a five-star rating for patient satisfaction from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. U.S. News awarded Saint Francis Hospital national rankings in five adult specialties, including:
- No. 27 Gastroenterology & GI Surgery

8. Long Island Jewish Medical Center
Long Island Jewish Medical Center, part of Northwell Health, is a 583-bed hospital in New Hyde Park. It provides world-class health services and earned its second consecutive Magnet designation for nursing excellence in 2020. Long Island Jewish Medical Center ranked nationally in six adult and nine pediatric specialties in 2022-23. It has earned many other awards and honors throughout the years, including:
- Baby-Friendly USA’s excellence designation for maternity care to support optimal infant feeding
- College of Healthcare Information Management Executives’ Most Wired Award
- LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader
- Surgical Review Corporation’s Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery
Long Island Jewish Medical Center seeks to serve its patients through extensive community outreach, health education and new advances in biomedical research. This facility also has several nursing practice committees and has upheld its Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders designation since 2002.
9. Montefiore Hospital – Moses Campus
Montefiore Hospital-Moses Campus, also known as Montefiore Medical Center, is located in the Bronx and is part of the Montefiore Health System. It ranked nationally ranked in six adult and three children’s specialties for 2022-23, including the following:

10. Stony Brook University Hospital
Located in Stony Brook, this 624-bed teaching hospital is a tertiary care center and Level I trauma center. Stony Brook University Hospital, or SBUH, seeks to deliver world-class patient care. It nationally ranked in two adult specialties, Diabetes & Endocrinology and Urology and rated high-performing in Neurology & Neurosurgery in 2022-23. SBUH earned several other ratings and awards in 2023, including:
