About
An electrocardiograph technician (EKG/ECG technician) performs EKG readings, Holter monitoring, stress tests, and other diagnostic tests to assist physicians in identifying and treating cardiovascular conditions.
Course Format
Many technical colleges offer EKG training across the country. There are also online programs available to prepare students for the CET exam. Training program admission requirements will vary and usually include basic knowledge tests, or a high school diploma or GED, as this is required to be eligible for examination.
It’s important to note that to be eligible for the CET examination, students must successfully perform a minimum of 10 EKGs on live individuals.
Class Time Required
CET training may be self-paced and can be completed in 3-6 months.
Cost
Cost depends on the college or online program. Most programs average around $2,000 though there are many cheaper options that are $600 or less. Programs may or may not include the examination fee, textbooks, and the externship or practical needed to complete 10 live EKGs.
Certification
There are various agencies that conduct the CET exam. National Healthcareer Association (NHA) is an accredited agency that most students are prepared for through their EKG program.
A college degree is not required for this certification. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED. Then, to be eligible for the exam, the applicant must have completed either of the following:
EKG technician training program within the last five years
1 year of supervised full-time work experience in an EKG setting
The cost for the exam through NHA is $117 and includes these steps:
Apply for the exam through a free NHA account.
Set a date and location (online or in-person).
Study. NHA offers practice exams for a fee.
Take the exam. This can be completed through a school, testing center, or live remote proctoring.
Receive results to your NHA account within two days.
Renewal
Renewal is required every two years. If renewing through NHA, you must complete 10 continuing education credits within the two-year period and pay the recertification fee of $179. If you receive your certification through NHA, they offer unlimited access to continuing education content without additional fees.
Other Resources
The NHA offers resources for the CET certification, including a candidate handbook.

Other related certifications include the National Telemetry Certification (NTA). The National Telemetry Association (NTA) offers telemetry training and certification for healthcare professionals.
