About

The Clinical Social Worker in Gerontology (CSW-G) certification is a professional credential for social workers who specialize in working with older adults. This certification, administered by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), demonstrates advanced competence in gerontological social work practice. The CSW-G certification is designed for clinicians who focus on improving the quality of life and promoting the well-being of older persons and their families.

Eligibility

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from an accredited school

  • Minimum of 2 years (3,000 hours) paid post-MSW experience with older adults, under appropriate supervision, within the last 5 years

  • 30 hours of continuing education (CE) on aging or relevant MSW specialization within 2 years of application

    • First-time applicants completing an MSW program within 5 years of application don’t need to fulfill CE requirement

  • Current state-issued clinical-level license or certification or recent Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Clinical-level exam

  • Adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics and the NASW Standards for Continuing Professional Education

Renewal

Renewal must occur every 2 years. To apply for renewal, applicants must:

  • Submit a copy of their current social work license

  • Complete continuing education

  • Complete renewal application with CE documented on the form

  • Submit renewal fee

Renewal Fees

  • $95 for all NASW members in good standing

  • $350 for nonmembers

Continuing Education

The continuing education requirement for CSW-G certification renewal is 20 contact hours within the past 2 years.
