They may also mail a paper renewal application, which must be postmarked or faxed on or before the renewal date. Certificants who renew online receive their new CSC certificate within 2 to 4 weeks. Those who renew through the mail or a fax receive their new CSC certificate within 3 to 4 weeks.

Renewal by CERPs
Meet renewal eligibility requirements for CSC (Adult)
Complete 25 clinical judgment CERPs in category A during the three-year certification period
Renewal by Exam

Renewal by Inactive Status
CSC credential holders may choose to renew under inactive status if they don’t meet renewal eligibility requirements and don’t want to lose their certification status. Inactive status provides nurses additional time, up to three years, to meet renewal eligibility requirements and accrue 144 practice hours within the most recent year. However, nurses may not use the CSC credential during the inactive status. Nurses can’t use inactive status for two consecutive renewals but can use it multiple times.
Submit a renewal application and pay the required fees.
Cost:
$115 renewal by exam for AACN members or $160 for non-members
$75 renewal by CERPs for AACN members or $130 for non-members
$55 inactive status renewal for for AACN members or $145 for non-members
Alternate Status
The alumnus status is available for nurses who no longer work in acute/critical care but are still in the nursing field. It’s valid for three years. The Alumnus CSC isn’t eligible to renew an active certification. Certificants must retake the exam as an initial applicant.
A candidate for retired status is eligible when no longer working in a position requiring an RN license and has no plans to return. A retired status renewal is valid for three years.
Continuing Education
Renewing the CSC subspecialty by CERPs requires a total of 25 Category A Clinical Judgment CERPs with the three-year certification renewal period. CERPs must pertain to cardiology and may include any topic on the CSC Test Plan. Initial or renewal ACLS courses may be counted as CERPs for CSC renewal once during the three-year certification renewal period. Applicants may find free CE courses for CSC renewal on the ACCN website.
CSCs should maintain a logbook of completed CERPs for at least three years in the event of an audit. A CERP log is available in the CSC Renewal Handbook.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CSC exam hard?
Any certification exam may be difficult without appropriate study time. In 2021, of the 984 applicants attempting the CSC exam, nearly 73% who passed the exam passed on their first attempt. However, 298 applicants failed the exam after a varied number of attempts, resulting in an overall pass rate of just under 70%.
Are there pediatric or neonatal versions of the Cardiac Surgery Certification?
No, the CSC subspecialty only focuses on adults.
May I count the same CERPs for renewal for both my specialty and subspecialty certifications?
Yes, you may count CERPs toward both your specialty and subspecialty renewals but only if you obtain the CERPs during the applicable date range for each credential. If you’re audited for your CSC subspecialty renewal, the CERPs must fall within that 3-year renewal cycle, but if you’re audited for your specialty certification, CERPs must fall within the renewal cycle of that certification.
Can I still renew my CSC certification if my specialty certification has expired?
of the requirements to renew your CSC certification is holding a current clinical nursing specialty certification that meets AACN’s criteria. Because the CSC is a subspecialty, you must have a valid specialty to attach it to. Expired specialty certifications don’t qualify.
What are the expiration guidelines of the clinical specialty certification tied to my CSC?
CSC eligibility requirements state the clinical specialty certification must be current for 90 days past your CSC renewal date.
Can I earn a Cardiac Surgery (CSC-Adult) online?
Yes you can earn a Cardiac Surgery (CSC-Adult) online.
