The Certified Registered Nurse in Ophthalmology (CRNO) credential is available through the National Certifying Board for Ophthalmic Registered Nurses (NCBORN). The Certified Registered Nurse in Ophthalmology credential (CRNO) is relevant for nurses with expertise in caring for clients with conditions of the eyes, including blindness, astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Nursing certification is provided to professionals who have demonstrated current knowledge and skills within their practice specialty. For nurses working with clients in ophthalmology, the specialty certification provides validation of their commitment to quality care for this population.

American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses (ASORN) members: $350
Non-members: $450
Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA) members: rate is $50 less than the non-member rate
Course Format
Applicants for the CRNO credential may apply online via the NCBORN. The CRNO certification exam is offered biannually.
The certification exam is 250 multiple-choice questions with four hours allotted for the exam completion.
Certification
To be eligible for the CRNO certification, the following are required:
Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the United States or the equivalent in other countries.
At least two years of full-time or the equivalent (4000) hours of experience in ophthalmic registered nursing practice.
Completion and filing of an Application for the Certification Examination for Ophthalmic Registered Nurses.

The CRNO certification is valid for five years. Recertification for the CRNO is available via two pathways:
Examination
Continuing Education (CE) hours.
To qualify for recertification by contact hours, a candidate must submit 75 contact hours with a minimum of 60 ophthalmic-specific contact hours.
All applications for CE recertification must be received by:
January 31 for those who first certified or recertified in February or March.
July 31 for those who first certified or recertified in August or September.
