Renewal by Inactive Status
CCRN-E credential holders may choose to renew under inactive status if they don’t meet renewal eligibility requirements and don’t want to lose their certification status. Inactive status provides nurses additional time, up to three years, to meet renewal eligibility requirements and accrue 144 practice hours within the most recent year. However, nurses may not use the CCRN-E credential during the inactive status. Nurses can’t use inactive status for two consecutive renewals but can use it multiple times.
Submit a renewal application and pay the required fees.
Cost:
$175 renewal by exam for AACN members or $280 for non-members
$150 renewal by CERPs for AACN members or $230 for non-members
$95 inactive status renewal for for AACN members or $175 for non-members
Alternate Renewal Status
The alumnus status is available for nurses who no longer work in acute/critical care but are still in the nursing field. It’s valid for three years. The Alumnus CCRN-K isn’t eligible to renew an active certification. Certificants must retake the exam as an initial applicant.
Candidates for retired status are eligible when they’re no longer working in a position requiring an RN license and have no plans to return. A retired status renewal is valid for three years.
Continuing Education
Renewal by CERPs requires 100 Synergy CERPs continuing education points. One hour of education time equals one point. Therefore qualifying activities that award 1 contact hour, 1 continued education hour, or 1 continuing medical education hour would all count as one CERP. However, one academic credit equals 15 CERPs.
CCRN-E certification renewal requires 100 CERPs during the three-year certification period. CERPs must include:
70 CERPs in Category A
5 CERPs in Category B
25 CERPs in Category C
CCRN-Es should maintain a logbook of completed CERPs for at least three years in the event of an audit. A CERP log is available in the CCRN-K Renewal Handbook.
CERPs may include activities, such as acute and critical care publications, presentations, leadership responsibilities, quality assurance activities, and professional nursing or healthcare organizations and volunteer activities.

Frequently asked questions
What is the CCRN-E?
CCRN-E is an extension of the CCRN certification. It recognizes the knowledge and skills of RNs and APRNs who primarily provide care to critically ill adult patients in a centralized or remotely-based teleICU through professional certification.
Can I get the CCRN-E credential if I don’t have the CCRN credential but work exclusively in the teleICU?
Yes, if you pass the CCRN-E certification exam, you receive your CCRN-E credential.
I qualify for both CCRN and CCRN-E. Can I apply for both certifications?
No, you may not hold both credentials simultaneously. If you qualify for both the CCRN and the CCRN-E, you must choose the one you prefer. However, you may switch between the two at renewal if your practice role prior to renewal fits one more than the other.
Is the CCRN-E exam hard?
Many nurses consider the CCRN-E difficult, especially for those who don’t take it seriously and study. Of the 40 candidates who took the exam in 2021, only half passed.
When and where can I take my CCRN-E exam?
You can take the CCRN-E exam year-round on Mondays through Saturdays at more than 300 Pearson VUE testing sites located throughout the nation. You can also schedule your exam through Live Remote Proctoring and take it at home or another location that offers a private area to complete your exam over the internet.
Can I earn a TeleICU Acute/Critical Care Nursing (CCRN-E Adult) online?
Yes you can earn a TeleICU Acute/Critical Care Nursing (CCRN-E Adult) online.
