The Burn Nursing Specialty Certification (CBRN) is designed for registered nurses specializing in the care and treatment of burn patients. This certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and clinical skills in managing burn injuries, including acute care, rehabilitation, and patient education.

Eligibility and Certification Requirements

• Current, active RN license.

• Extensive experience in burn care nursing, often quantified by a minimum number of hours or years in clinical burn care.

• Completion of specific continuing education or professional development activities related to burn nursing.

• Passing a burn nursing specialty certification examination.

Cost

Initial exam: $285 for American Burn Association (ABA) members, $380 for non-members, or $195 with a military discount

Exam Format

The computer-based CBRN exam can be taken either in-person at Pearson VUE or remotely via live proctoring through PSI Exams. You must have a scheduled appointment to take the CBRN exam.

The exam includes 175 multiple-choice questions (150 scored and 25 unscored pretest items) covering various aspects of burn care, including pathophysiology, acute management, wound care, rehabilitation, and psychological support.

Certification Process

Complete any necessary continuing education or professional development in burn nursing.

Apply for the Burn Nursing Specialty Certification through a certifying organization like the ABA.

Your performance on the CBRN exam will determine your score, which is based on the number of exam items you answer correctly. Out of the 150 scored items, you must answer 114 or 115 items correctly, depending on the exam form you take, in order to pass. Once you complete the exam, your PSI score report will indicate whether or not you have achieved a passing score.

Burn Nursing Specialty Certification generally requires renewal every 4 years.

Renewal involves completing continuing education credits in burn care nursing and related areas and paying a recertification fee.
