About

The Certification for Autonomic Professionals (CAP) is a specialized credential for healthcare professionals who work in the field of autonomic disorders. This certification, sponsored by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) acknowledges expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of autonomic nervous system dysfunctions. 

Professionals who pursue this certification often include neurologists, cardiologists, internal medicine practitioners and other healthcare professionals who manage conditions like orthostatic hypotension, syncope, and autonomic neuropathy.

Eligibility

Candidates become eligible to sit for the CAP exam through one of two pathways.

Pathway 1: 

  • Associate degree or higher

  • 1 year of clinical Autonomic Testing experience

  • 20 documented autonomic cases

  • At least 3 educational activities related to Autonomics within the last 3 years

  • Current CPR / BLS certification

Pathway 2:

  • Employed in Autonomics

  • 2 years of clinical Autonomic Testing experience 

  • 40 documented autonomic cases

  • At least 3 educational activities related to Autonomics within the last 3 years

  • Current CPR / BLS certification

Course Format

Exam Format

The Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) administers the CAP exam on behalf of ABRET. Candidates have 4 hours to complete the multiple-choice exam, which cover:

  • Assessment (15%)

  • Setup (20%)

  • Patient Tests (33%)

  • Testing Factors (32%)

Candidates receive a link via email to retrieve their unofficial test results before leaving the testing center. They receive their official results within about 4 to 6 weeks.

Candidates who fail the exam must complete all application steps again to retake the exam, including filling out a new application and paying the full application fee.

In Person

The CAP exam is administered at computer-based testing facilities managed by Prometric daily (Monday through Saturday, excluding holidays).

Certification

Application Process

  • Read the Candidate Handbook and follow directions.

  • Go to ABRET.org, click "APPLY" then select "CAP."

  • Click "Apply" and choose your eligibility pathway.

  • Log in or create a new ABRET account.

  • Fill out the application and upload eligibility documents.

After eligibility verification, exam registration will be sent to PTC. Candidates must schedule and sit for the exam within three months of becoming eligible or reapply with a new fee.

Renewal

CAP renewal applicants may recertify by retaking the CAP exam and paying the full exam fee, plus the renewal fee. Alternatively, they may complete continuing education for renewal. The CAP credential must be renewed every 5 years.

  • Renewal by exam requires the current exam fee

Continuing Education

Recertification will require 15 hours of documented continuing education.
