About

The Certified School Social Work Specialist (C-SSWS) from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) works with families and individuals in a school setting. They have a wide range of responsibilities, including advocacy, crisis intervention, case management, and conflict resolution. 

School social work is a vital part of the profession, and this credential demonstrates that these professionals have the core skills and knowledge required to excel in the school environment. There is no exam required for this certification.

Certification

To be eligible for a C-SSWS, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a master’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited program 

  • Documentation of 2,160 hours or two years of paid, supervised post-master’s experienced working as a social worker in a school setting

  • Proof of one of the following:

    • A current MSW state social work license

    • An exam-based school social work certification, license, or registration issued by the state

In addition, you will also have to submit an application that includes a Reference Evaluation Form from a supervisor and a Social Work Reference Form from a colleague. You will also need to submit an original transcript in a sealed envelope from your social work program directly to the NASW as well as documentation verifying the number of hours worked.

Renewal

You must renew your C-SSWS credential every two years. To do so, you have to maintain a valid state social worker license and complete 20 hours of continuing education that are relevant to school social work.

The NASW will remind you via email 60 days before your current certification is going to expire.
