COURSE FORMAT
About
Clients have an increased risk of low bone density with age. For clients at risk for osteoporosis, Radiologic Technologists (RT) perform bone density scans to determine bone health. These diagnostic tests guide the treatment plans for physicians.
The radiologic technologist who performs dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) testing may be eligible for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification in Bone Densitometry (BD).
There are three pathways to apply for the various ARRT certifications. The application process and related fees are dependent on the application pathway chosen by the RT. For the BD certification, the post-primary eligibility pathway is required.
Costs
The application fee is $225 and $450 if using NMTCB as a supporting category.
Reapplication: $200
Certification
The post-primary certification requires the following prerequisites:
ARRT certification in a recognized supporting category. This includes radiography or nuclear medicine.
Completion of 16 hours of education within the 2 years before application. At least one credit hour must be in each category below:
Patient Care
Image Production
Procedures
Completion of 125 of the ARRT listed Mandatory Procedures, which includes DEXA scans and 3 elective procedures. These procedures must be verified by a certified RT, supervisor, or physician.
Review of the ARRT Standards of Ethics
Applications are submitted through the ARRT online account created by the candidate.
Renewal
RTs will be required to update their certification annually. The deadline is the last day of the applicant’s month of birth. Renewal is available on the ARRT website.
Rt’s are required to record their continuing education every two years as part of their annual renewal process. After obtaining the initial credential, the two-year period ends on the last day of the birth month two years after certification.
The ARRT provides a detailed handbook on the requirements for continuing education.
