The BCG certification is a voluntary credential for occupational therapy practitioners who have developed advanced skills in working with older adults. It recognizes expertise in promoting health and wellness, preventing or minimizing the effects of acute and chronic diseases, and maximizing independence in daily activities among the elderly.

Completion Time: 4 hours

Eligibility and Certification Requirements

  • An active occupational therapy license.

  • Initial certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

  • At least 5 years of clinical experience as an occupational therapist, with a minimum of 5,000 hours dedicated to gerontology practice.

  • 500 hours of professional development activities related to gerontology within the last 5 years.

  • A professional portfolio demonstrating expertise in gerontology, which includes case reflections, professional development records, and examples of leadership or scholarship.

Cost: $525 for AOTA members, $650 for non-members

Exam Format

The BCG exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions that assess the application and analysis of information specific to gerontology specialty practice.

The BCG exam is a computer-based test that can be taken at any of PSI’s Test Centers located throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
