About
The Board Certification in Gerontology (BCG) certification is a voluntary credential for occupational therapy practitioners who have developed advanced skills in working with older adults. It recognizes expertise in promoting health and wellness, preventing or minimizing the effects of acute and chronic diseases, and maximizing independence in daily activities among the elderly. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) offers the BCG exam.
Completion Time: 4 hours
Eligibility and Certification Requirements
An active occupational therapy license.
Must hold a current license or certification in good standing from an AOTA-recognized credentialing or regulatory body.
Have at least 3 years of practice as an occupational therapist, based on the date your license or certification was issued.
Accumulate a minimum of 3,000 hours of gerontology-related experience within the past 5 years. This may include:
Direct patient care
Supervision or teaching
Consultation or administration
Case or care management
Community programming
Research
Of those 3,000 hours, at least 500 hours must involve providing occupational therapy services directly to clients.
Cost: $575 for AOTA members, $700 for non-members

Exam Format
The BCG exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions that assess the application and analysis of information specific to gerontology specialty practice.
The BCG exam is a computer-based test that can be taken at any of PSI’s Test Centers located throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Renewal
BCG certification requires renewal every five years. Renewal involves submitting evidence of 60 hours continued professional development and expertise in gerontology. Requirements include:
Must hold a current license or certification in good standing from an AOTA-recognized body.
Have at least 1,500 hours of experience in the certification area within the past 5 years.
Complete at least 60 contact hours of professional development in the certification area within the past 5 years.
