About

The Accredited Case Manager - Registered Nurse (ACM-RN) certification is granted by the American Case Management Association (ACMA).

An accredited case manager oversees the care delivered to patients in many settings. They help put together the plan of care and coordinate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure that the patient is receiving the care they need. Then, they reassess to ensure the patient is progressing appropriately. The responsibilities of this role vary greatly depending on the facility, but certification is an ideal way to demonstrate skill and professionalism.

ACM-RN certification is unique in that it's open to both nurses and social workers. It addresses case management in healthcare settings and tests core knowledge of the professional background.

Costs

  • Exam fee: $349, can be expedited for $46

  • Re-examination fee for Core and Simulation: $349

  • Re-examination fee for Core or Simulation: $190

Course Format

The exam has two components. One consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, with 90 of the questions scored and 20 unscored. The other part of the exam is discipline-specific simulation questions, so for registered nurses, questions would be nursing-related. This section has five questions, one of which is unscored. The sections are given in random order.

You have two hours to complete the multiple-choice portion and 90 minutes for the simulation questions.

There are two ways to apply to take the exam. The first is the “apply now” option, where you can pay a premium fee and schedule the exam immediately. Applications must be submitted online. If you apply and are deemed ineligible to take the exam, you're refunded the examination fee minus the non-refundable $75 processing fee.

In Person

Once your application is approved, you will receive written confirmation and a notice to schedule your exam. PSI administers the exam in its testing centers. You can schedule either online or by telephone at (833) 333-4755. When scheduling your exam, you will need to know what testing center you want to go to. You can find which sites are available and closest to you using this tool on PSI’s website.

Certification

To be eligible for this certification, you must have 12 months of experience working in a health delivery system, a valid and current nursing license, and a minimum of one year of 2,080 hours of supervised, paid experience working in a case management role.

Candidates with less than two years of experience must provide contact information for a supervisor and attest that they have the required experience. The National Board of Case Management (NBCM) understands that some case managers may be eligible to take the exam with only one year of experience.

The score report will have results for both the multiple-choice and the discipline-specific simulation portions. You must pass both sections to pass the exam.

Renewal

The ACM-RN credential is good for four years. To recertify, you must complete 40 hours of continuing education credits, 30 of which must be specific to case management in your field of practice. The remaining 10 hours can be non-case management related, but they must be related to the field of practice.

Renewal Fee: $195

Other Resources

The American Case Management Association provides plenty of resources to help you prepare, including a candidate handbook. They also provide in-depth information about how the exam is scored.

Online study guides and self-assessments are available, but they are not free. Prices range from $129 to $357, depending on which option you choose and whether you are a member of the ACMA.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I don’t pass the ACM-RN exam?

If you don't pass, you can apply to retake the exam through the online portal. If you pass one part of the exam but not the other, you only have to retake the part of the exam you didn't pass. The ACMA keeps your score for the section you passed for six months. You can retake the exam as many times as you want within those six months. If you don't reschedule the exam within this six-month window, you must sit for the entire exam again.

Can I choose whether I want to take the ACM-RN simulation or multiple-choice questions first?

No, the order of the ACM-RN examination is randomized. You can't request a specific order.

What are the approved CE providers for ACM-RN recertification?

CE providers must be approved by one of the following organizations:

  • Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) and the CCMC Pre-Approved Continuing Education (PACE) program

  • Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)

  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

  • American Case Management Association (ACMA)

  • National Association of Social Workers (NASW)

  • All state nursing and social work board approved educational courses

What happens if I miss my ACM-RN test date?

You may reschedule your ACM-RN test once if you contact PSI at least two days before your scheduled testing date. You must call at (888) 519-9901 to reschedule your exam. If you don't reschedule at least two days before your scheduled date, don't show up to take the exam on the scheduled date, or reschedule the exam more than once, you forfeit your exam registration fees and must pay them again.

How much does it cost to take the ACM-RN exam again after failing it?

You're only required to retest for whichever section(s) of the ACM-RN exam you didn't pass. If you only need to retake either the Core or Simulation section, the cost is $190 for the single section. If you must retest for both sections, the cost is $349.

How do I get my ACM-RN wall certificate?

Effective January 1, 2021, ACMA no longer mails paper copies of the wall certificate. Instead, you must access and print your certificate from your certification portal on the ACMA website within 24-48 hours.

  • Visit the ACM website

  • Log into your account

  • Go to your certification portal

  • Click on “My Credential”

  • You can view, print, or download your certificate as a PDF
