About
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics for Radiation Therapy (MRI for RT) exam offered by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) is for candidates who’ve already earned certification in MRI Physics and/or Radiation Oncology Physics through the ABMP. This certification further tests the applicant's knowledge and experience in applying MRI in radiation therapy. To qualify for MRI for RT certification, applicants must pass a written and an oral exam.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
Hold MRI Physics and/or Radiation Oncology Physics certification
Completion Time: Time varies
Cost:
Part 2 Written Exam: $608 Check or $630 PayPal
Part 3 Oral Exam: $695 Check or $720 PayPal
Part 3 Oral Exam (conditional retake): $347 Check or $360 PayPal
Late Fee: $150
Course Format
Exam Format
Part 2 is a written exam and Part 3 is an oral exam. Both exams cover the following topics:
MR Signal Generation and Manipulation
Spatial Encoding and Imaging Formation
Image Pulse Sequences, Signal-to-Noise Ratio and Image Contrast
Distortion and other Image Artifacts
Physics in Radiation Therapy
Image Segmentation and Co-registration and MR-only Treatment Planning Methods
Hardware and Instrumentation
Site Planning, Commissioning and Quality Assurance for MRsim and MR-LINAC
Safety
The written exam is taken at a physical venue on an online platform on the applicant’s device (laptop).
The oral exam tests whether the candidate has sufficient clinical experience and can demonstrate appropriate responses to clinical situations orally to the examination committee. Scoring in the oral exam includes Pass, Conditional Pass and Fail in 7 topics. Candidates who receive a Conditional Pass in 3 or fewer categories can retake the oral portion of the exam on these topics only on the next exam date. Those who receive a Conditional Pass in 4 or more topics receive a Failing score and must reapply to take the entire oral exam again.
Candidates receive an admission card prior to their test date indicating the location, date and time of their written test. They must present this admission card and picture identification to be admitted to the test. Candidates should bring several #2 pencils and a non-programmable, battery-operated silent calculator for their written exam.

Continuing Education
Maintaining the MRI Physics for RT certification requires the completion of 125 CE hours. CE credits must consist of a minimum of 65 Category 1 credits and no more than 60 Category 2 credits, with supporting documentation submitted with the renewal application.
Category 1 credits include planned events by accredited CE providers, such as national and local meetings of professional organizations, lectures or meetings in which participants can attend physically or remotely and enduring materials based on recorded or published content.
MRI Physics for RT certificate holders must also earn a minimum of 10 additional Category 1 hours specific to MRI Physics for RT at a rate of 2 credits per year during each 5-year certification period.
Category 2 credits are self-assessment credits from informally planned activities, such as conferences, teaching, consultations with colleagues, practice-based self-study, in-service presentations, journal clubs, journal articles read or published, books or chapters read or published, vendor-sponsored educational classes and technical committee memberships.
