Medical Assistant - Provident Hospital


General Purpose: Assists clinical staff during clinic sessions as needed; provides follow-up correspondence to patients for appointments; provides risk reduction education to patients. MA Essential Functions: * Prepares patients for examination and treatment by taking patient histories, vital signs, and risk factors-documents in the electronic medical record. * Administers immunizations and other injections, as well as oral medications ordered. * Maintains proper documentation of pertinent nursing activities and client interactions. * Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments. * Assists in phoning in patient prescriptions and refill per physician direction and documents accordingly in patient's chart. * Informs patients of test results along with follow up instructions per physician/physician assistant's direction. * Assists in facilitating discharge of patients on clinic days through proper education and clarification of medication dose schedule. * Prepares for clinic days by printing labs, confirming appointments by phone * Documents clinic no shows in patient's electronic medical record, assists in calling patients to reschedule missed appointments, contacts medical providers with urgent medical problems and acts as clinical liaison for clients and providers. * Assists in maintaining medications logs. Assists in insuring that medication is stored properly and secured, assists in checking medication for expirations dates. * Participates in continuing education as it relates to HIV and nursing practices. * Maintains strict confidentiality according to HIPPA standards. * Attends required meetings and participates in committees as required. * Establishes and maintains effective, professional working relationships with patients and their representatives, managers, staff, physicians, other hospital departments, outside agencies and the public. Qualifications and Skills required for the job: * Must be a Certified Medical Assistant in the State of Illinois * Previous ambulatory experience required * Must be able to give IM and SC Injections * Must be culturally sensitive and demonstrate respect for HIV positive persons and sensitivity to people with diverse lifestyles. Experience working with clients with multiple needs (e.g., issues of substance abuse, mental health, homelessness) and previous work in HIV a plus. * Must be able to work well in a team and under stressful situations. * Must have a basic knowledge of Windows, MS Office, PC'S and electronic medical records * Must possess good communication skills (verbal and written) * Must adhere to all program and Provident Hospital policies and procedures * Must be able to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift 20lb boxes occasionally, frequent walking, occasional bending * Must possess a valid driver's license, current insurance and a reliable vehicle. * Adheres to all applicable State, Local and Federal Laws * Ability to work independently and in a team environment: takes initiative, is a self-starter * Must participate in continuing education in HIV in order to remain current * Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Pay

Average Illinois Staff Position Pay

$17.13/hour
